The Heart of Auschwitz

Released November 12th 2010

A film by Carl Leblanc

Produced by Luc Cyr

A filmmaker sets out to discover how a beautiful, little hand-made birthday booklet came to be within the grim walls of a concentration camp. Who made it? How did it survive the horrors of war, and then, decades later, end its long voyage in Montreal’s Holocaust Memorial?

This feature documentary tells the story of the creators of this remarkable little book, made in the shape of a heart, and given on December 12th, 1944, to a young woman named Fania to celebrate her 20th birthday... in Auschwitz. It contains the thoughts and wishes of fifteen of her friends, who risked their very lives for the gesture. In this heart of evil, they refused to cross that last line, to relinquish their humanity. As the filmmaker sets out to track down the various authors all these years later, he strives to bring the women’s poignant gesture back to life.
